Understanding the Fractional Inch Scale
Standard imperial rulers divide each full inch into binary fractions. Our online ruler renders distinct tick heights for each subdivision level so you can easily identify measurement points:
- Full Inch (1", 2", 3"): The longest tick marks with bold numbering.
- Half Inch (1/2" = 0.500"): The second-longest tick located halfway between each full inch.
- Quarter Inch (1/4", 3/4" = 0.250", 0.750"): Medium-height tick marks dividing each half into quarters.
- Eighth Inch (1/8", 3/8", 5/8", 7/8" = 0.125", 0.375", 0.625", 0.875"): Short tick marks.

Calibrating for True 1:1 Inch Scale
By definition, 1 inch equals exactly 25.4 millimeters. When you calibrate our ruler using the physical card method (ISO 7810: 85.60 mm = 3.370 inches), both metric and imperial measurements are calibrated simultaneously with zero rounding discrepancy.
