Why millimeter measurements need a verified scale

Millimeters are small physical distances, so a modest display-scale error can become visible in the final reading. The browser's CSS coordinate system does not by itself establish the physical size of the display.

For physical measurements, compare the ruler with a known reference and calibrate the active screen. The software can then use a consistent CSS-pixel-to-millimeter scale for its visual ticks and numeric readouts.

Place a guide at an object edge and read the corresponding millimeter position. The displayed decimals describe the ruler's current scale; they do not create physical accuracy by themselves.

Crosshair coordinates

Track horizontal and vertical positions when comparing the edges of a two-dimensional object or checking layout spacing.

A practical measuring workflow

Set browser zoom to 100%.
Calibrate the screen against a known physical reference.
Align one object edge with the ruler origin or a guide.
Read the millimeter position at the opposite edge.
Cross-check another known length when the dimension matters.
